About

The Department of Biology is a brand new Department formed on 21 May 2024 under the School of Life Sciences. Programmes in Biology were introduced in 2022 with the implementation of NEP but the Department itself was constituted in 2024. The Department comprises PhD qualified faculty members with expertise in both Botany and Zoology.

The proposal to form the Department was put forward in November 2023 considering that Biology is at the heart of some of the biggest challenges facing humanity and our planet. From improving human health to tackling climate change, and enhancing agriculture to conserving the environment, biologists play an important role. Biology, being the science of all life and a vast eclectic science, was also found to be a necessary course due to its interdisciplinary nature. A major in Biology combines courses from Botany and Zoology to provide a strong foundation in biological principles with the flexibility to explore a variety of topics.

Vision

To be a centre of excellence in life sciences education and research, fostering scientific inquiry, ethical values, and environmental responsibility. The department aims to nurture competent, socially committed biologists equipped to address global challenges through innovation, interdisciplinary learning, and community engagement.

Mission

To provide quality, research-oriented biology education through innovative teaching and hands-on laboratory training. The department is committed to fostering critical thinking, ethical scientific practice, and environmental awareness while encouraging student participation in research, outreach programs, and interdisciplinary collaboration for societal and sustainable development.

At the School of Life Sciences, St Joseph's University, we believe in the power of asking questions. Questions that stem from observing and pondering about the world around us, questions about biomolecules and ecosystems, questions that continue to nurture curiosity, imagination, and a spirit of exploration. Our mission is to spark a lasting interest and joy in learning, discovery and research, while equipping students with the skills and confidence to excel in academia, industry, and society. We strive to create an environment that is intellectually engaging, collaborative, and supportive - one that helps every student to continue asking interesting questions, and forge meaningful paths.
