It has a long history of excellence in teaching and research. Since its inception in 2008, the School has strived to provide diversity and a focused approach depending on the student’s needs and goals.

At SCMS, we study the ways that communication techniques and technologies shape who we are, how we govern ourselves, and what kinds of cultures we inhabit. We embrace both media theory and media practice. Over the years, we’ve trained scholars who’ve reshaped their fields and entered into the field of journalism, advertising, Public Relations, corporate communication, filmmaking, animation, among others.

Vision

To equip students with the skills required to become modern media practitioners and empower them to be conscientious professionals in the contemporary media industry.

Mission

To urge students to think critically about how the media operates and engender debates regarding important socio-political issues. To transform students into active participants and stakeholders in the world around them.

We are living in an Information Society, in which a large number of the people are information workers; they produce information and they feed on information. More appropriately, it is a Communication Society, in which everything is molded in terms of communication. If you are not a communication worker, at least in your own little way, you don’t belong to the 21st century. Addressing this reality, the School of Communication & Media Studies (SCMS) strives to train our students become effective communication managers, who manage communication content meaningfully and efficaciously.

To this effect, currently we have five dedicated communication programs – three at the under graduate (UG) level and two at the post graduate (PG) or masters. The UG programs – Bachelor of Art in Visual Communication (BA-VC or BVC for short), Bachelor of Vocation in Visual Arts and Filmmaking (BVoc-VMF), and Bachelor of Vocation in Digital Arts and Animation (BVoc-DMA) deal in contemporary media technologies and platforms, bringing in the best academically and professionally. We have best of teachers from academia and industry. They go out of their way to accompany you in your academic, professional, and human endeavors.

Traveling thousands of kilometres away from home was a thrilling for me. The opportunity to visit Ostrava, Czech Republic, as a student of St. Joseph’s university for a workshop on the worldwide anti-cyberbullying initiative was truly a transformative experience. Over the course of 14 days, I found myself feeling right at home in Ostrava. One of the highlights was attending a theatre workshop where we explored how theatrical techniques can effectively address serious issues such as cyberbullying and hate speech online.

We also had the privilege of conducting workshops for the local youth in Trimec city, delving into topics like internet safety through engaging discussions and creating informative posters. Interacting with participants from countries like the Czech Republic, Portugal, Philippines, and Ukraine enriched our understanding of different cultures.

Personally, witnessing snow for the first time felt like stepping into a fairy tale. I am immensely grateful to Institute of Communication and Media Studies (ICMS) of our university, and the director, Fr. Rego for this opportunity. I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone at ICMS for making this journey possible.

MA Journalism and Mass Communication 2021-2023

My experience at the Institute of Communication and Media Studies was transformative and filled with extraordinary moments. The Erasmus+ program in the Czech Republic, sponsored by the European Union, allowed me to raise awareness about cyberbullying while gaining expertise in my field. The institute's placement drives and sessions with industry experts shaped my career choices and boosted my confidence.

During our time in the Czech Republic, we explored landmarks like the Risks of the Internet office, New City Hall Observation Tower, and Dolni Vitkovice. Engaging in sessions, witnessing snowfall, and participating in the firefighters' ball immersed us in Czech society and culture.

Despite challenges like the language barrier, our host Martin guided us during independent ventures. Cultural differences provided opportunities for understanding and adaptation, sparking captivating conversations on personal space and marriage.

Experiencing snowfall for the first time was enchanting, though the harsh winter climate and distinct cuisine initially challenged us. The warmth and kindness of the locals, exemplified by gestures like leaving chocolates, eased our homesickness.

The highlight was preparing dinner to showcase our cultures, fostering deeper connections and cherished memories.

As I approach graduation, I am filled with pride and confidence. The skills acquired will guide my future career with optimism. This transformative experience will always fuel my journey.

Ms Fiza Ziyad
MA Journalism and Mass Communication 2021-2023

During my time at ICMS, I was fortunate to travel to the Philippines for the Erasmus+ project "Technology for Peace." Selected by FSL India, a project partner, I joined a 6-member Indian team. This experience was truly life-changing, exposing me to diverse cultures and fostering meaningful interactions.

The project focused on developing a volunteering app, and I actively contributed during the first phase, attending conferences at various Philippine universities. I am grateful to be invited to the second phase, which will take place in Vietnam on May 19th. There, I will be involved in media planning for the app's launch and marketing in India in June.

This project provided invaluable exposure and helped me develop as a mass media student. I am deeply thankful to ICMS for granting me this opportunity to step out of my comfort zone.
