The programme concentrates on research and lab experiments, helping students develop essential analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving, and mathematical skills, which further broaden into interpreting scientific data.
The Postgraduate Physics programme was initiated by the Department in 2010 to promote higher studies and research in Physics. The section started with very moderate grants and a humble number of twenty students. The Postgraduate section has now grown to include sixty students. The programme attempts to provide Physics skills to students by way of providing ground for the application of concepts. There is a very active forum engaged in the discussion of Physics, strengthened by various visiting experts giving small discourses in their fields of specialisation.
Some of the programmes are provided through learning management systems. The numerical techniques programme has a hands-on laboratory using Python programming. There are two electives 1. Astrophysics 2. Material Science. The students will have to do a mandatory project with premier research institutes like ISRO, IISc, RRI and IIA etc during their final semester. In addition, the programme has initiated bridge courses to make learning Physics at the Postgraduate level more conformable, provide continuity to the narrative from the Undergraduate curriculum, and help students from disparate backgrounds. The Department will also soon start a PhD programme in the thrust areas of Astrophysics and Material Science.
